Strong generation in derived categories of schemes

Ever since Rouquier used the strong generation of certain derived
categories to prove the representation dimension conjecture, there has been
considerable interest in the subject. Despite all the literature little was
known in mixed characteristic.

We will review the history, and then explain the new results which show,
among other things, that the derived category of coherent sheaves on a
noetherian scheme is strongly generated whenever the scheme is separated and
of finite type over a separated, excellent scheme of dimension <=2.
