This is joint work with Joel Hass. We consider the space of straight triangulations of a compact surface, and show that in most cases, the components of this space are contractible. I will start by explaining the meaning of "straight triangulation", and will also discuss some of the long history of such problems. Then I will sketch how we prove contractibility.
